Sicily’s Nero D’Avola’s used to be a value based everyday red. But the Occhipinti Siccagno ’06 Nero D’Avola Sicilia while still young is refined, complex, cellarable and still affordable. This one is grown at very high elevations on Mt. Etna (yes, close to the Roman gods!), in pure volcanic soil, and is delicately mineral with a lingering aftertaste.

The production of this wine is biodynamic, with no synthetic products or chemicals used in the winery. This is becoming more important to me as there is a taste from Vin Naturel wine that is unique and what I imagine wine is suppose to taste like. Well worth trying a bottle if you can find it.

I’m drinking it with a rice bowl from Whole Foods. How’s that for pairing?
