Sometimes you just need a big and bold California Cab.
I learned to drink wine in Napa, so for me picking up a robust California Cab is comforting, unchallenging but satisfying nonetheless.
Nothing complex about these Cabernet Sauvignons. But there is signature of pure taste that feels right. Clean. Powerful. Fruit forward. Loaded with tannins. And a long California finish.
The problem is that they are an expensive habit and drinking California Cabs can be painful on the budget.
Enter Gideon Beinstock in the Sierra Foothills who has been making organic wines that lean towards a sense of place since 1978. I like his Cabs and they have a unique taste to each bottling. And they are surprisingly affordable.
The ’99 Estate Sierra Foothills Cab at $25-30 a bottle fits the bill for a really good Cal Cab that stands above the crowd, tastes terrific with food, and can function as an excellent everyday red or an occasional California treat.
The Renaissance ’99 Estate Cab is available from a variety of online venues. If you can’t find this bottling, check out this winemaker and give his wines a try.
